오클랜드 도심에서 차로 멀지 않은 곳에 위치한 켈리탈튼 수족관은 독특한 터널형 구조로 유명합니다. 마치 바닷속을 걷는 듯한 기분을 느낄 수 있도록 설계되어 있어서 입구부터 설레기 시작했어요. 주차장에 차를 대고 안으로 들어서니, 시원한 공기와 함께 은은한 바다 향기가 저를 맞이해 주었습니다.
가장 먼저 발길이 향한 곳은 남극 체험 존이었습니다. 켈리탈튼 경이 남극 탐험을 떠났던 역사를 기념하며 만들어진 이곳은, 실제 남극 기지를 재현해 놓은 듯한 모습이었어요. 펭귄들이 자유롭게 헤엄치고 뛰어다니는 모습은 정말 사랑스러웠습니다. 특히, 킹펭귄의 위엄 있는 자태와 젠투펭귄의 재빠른 움직임은 눈을 뗄 수 없게 만들더라구요. 추운 환경에 적응한 펭귄들의 생태를 가까이에서 관찰할 수 있는 흔치 않은 경험이었어요.
다음으로 향한 곳은 바로 메인 수조, 'Sea Caves'였습니다. 투명한 아크릴 터널을 따라 걷는 동안, 머리 위와 양옆으로 거대한 가오리와 상어들이 유유히 헤엄치는 모습은 정말 압도적이었어요. 마치 제가 드넓은 바닷속을 탐험하는 듯한 기분이 들었습니다. 특히, 커다란 만타가오리가 제 바로 위를 지나갈 때는 숨이 멎는 듯한 황홀감을 느꼈답니다. 다양한 종류의 물고기들이 형형색색의 산호초 사이를 누비는 모습도 정말 아름다웠어요.
켈리탈튼 수족관은 단순히 해양 생물을 전시하는 공간을 넘어, 다양한 체험 활동을 제공한다는 점이 인상 깊었습니다. 아이들을 위한 터치풀에서는 불가사리나 해삼 등을 직접 만져볼 수 있었고, 해양 생태계 보호의 중요성을 알리는 교육 프로그램도 운영되고 있었어요. 저도 잠시 동심으로 돌아가 불가사리를 조심스럽게 만져보았는데, 생각보다 단단하고 독특한 질감이 느껴졌습니다.
수족관 곳곳에는 흥미로운 정보들이 가득했습니다. 각 해양 생물에 대한 설명은 물론, 서식 환경과 보호 노력에 대한 이야기도 자세하게 소개되어 있어서, 단순히 보는 즐거움을 넘어 배우는 재미도 느낄 수 있었어요. 특히 멸종 위기에 처한 해양 동물들에 대한 이야기는 마음을 찡하게 만들었습니다.
점심시간이 되어서는 수족관 내에 있는 카페테리아에서 간단한 식사를 했습니다. 창밖으로 보이는 아름다운 바다 풍경을 감상하며 먹는 샌드위치는 정말 꿀맛이었어요. 식사 후에는 기념품 샵에 들러 귀여운 펭귄 인형과 오클랜드 마그넷을 구입했습니다.

My Amazing Day at Kelly Tarlton's SEA LIFE Aquarium in Auckland!
Hello everyone! Today I'm going to share my recent visit to Kelly Tarlton's SEA LIFE Aquarium in Auckland, New Zealand. For someone who loves marine life like me, this place was truly a dream come true! I had a much more diverse and exciting experience than I expected, and I really wanted to share it with you all.
Located not far from downtown Auckland, Kelly Tarlton's Aquarium is famous for its unique tunnel structure. Designed to make you feel like you're walking underwater, the excitement started from the moment I entered. After parking the car, the cool air and subtle scent of the sea greeted me as I stepped inside.
The first place I headed to was the Antarctic Ice Adventure. Commemorating Kelly Tarlton's own Antarctic expeditions, this zone recreated the look of a real Antarctic base. Watching the penguins swim and waddle freely was absolutely delightful. In particular, the majestic posture of the King penguins and the swift movements of the Gentoo penguins were captivating. It was a rare experience to observe the ecology of penguins adapted to the cold environment up close.
Next, I made my way to the main tank, the 'Sea Caves'. Walking through the transparent acrylic tunnel, with giant rays and sharks swimming gracefully overhead and alongside me, was truly breathtaking. It felt as if I were exploring the vast ocean. Especially when a large manta ray passed directly above me, I felt a moment of awe that almost stopped my breath. The sight of various types of fish darting among the colorful coral reefs was also incredibly beautiful.
What impressed me most about Kelly Tarlton's Aquarium was that it offered a variety of interactive experiences beyond simply displaying marine life. The touch pool for children allowed them to gently touch starfish and sea cucumbers, and there were also educational programs highlighting the importance of marine ecosystem conservation. I also briefly returned to my childhood and carefully touched a starfish, which felt surprisingly firm and unique.
Throughout the aquarium, there was a wealth of interesting information. Explanations about each marine creature, as well as detailed stories about their habitats and conservation efforts, were provided. This made the experience not only visually enjoyable but also educational. The stories about endangered marine animals, in particular, tugged at my heartstrings.
When it was lunchtime, I had a simple meal at the cafeteria inside the aquarium. The sandwich I ate while admiring the beautiful sea view outside the window was absolutely delicious. After the meal, I visited the souvenir shop and bought a cute penguin plushie and an Auckland magnet.
The time I spent at Kelly Tarlton's Aquarium flew by so quickly. It was a precious experience where I could encounter various marine creatures up close and enhance my understanding of the ocean through interesting exhibits and interactive activities. If you are visiting Auckland, I highly recommend a visit to Kelly Tarlton's Aquarium! Especially if you are with children, it will be an unforgettable memory.
On the way back home, the image of the blue sea and the adorable marine creatures was still vivid in my mind. I definitely want to visit again if I have the chance!
